The History of Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga is based on the teachings of the late yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar. Mr Iyengar began teaching in Pune, India, in 1936 at the age of 18 and continued to teach and practice until his death in 2014. His life and work inspire students all over the world. His daughter, Geeta, and his son, Prashant, are also accomplished teachers and authors of yoga texts. The Iyengar family’s teachings are deeply grounded in the yoga sutras of Patanjali, an ancient summation of the path of yoga considered to be at least 2,500 years old.

The Iyengar Yoga method is renowned for its focus on precision, timing and use of props. Created and developed over 75 years ago by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, the Iyengar method is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga taught by Patanjali over 2,500 years ago.

“Whenever we find stiffness in the body, our mind should be especially supple. It is never the stiffness in our bodies that limits our practice; it is always the stiffness of our mind.” - Geeta Iyengar.
